Man in critical condition after concrete mixer accident

A construction worker was clinging to life Friday after a concrete mixer snagged his sweater and pulled him inside.

“He was just mixing a batch of cement and he got sucked in the mixer,” said Phil Pinsonneault, who was also working at the construction site. “One of the paddles must have caught him by the sweater or something. Once it catches you, it’s pretty strong, pulls you. So it obviously pulled him right in.”

Windsor police said the 47-year-old man was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

Officers responded to the emergency call around 8:30 a.m. for an industrial accident. The man was mixing cement outside a large new house still under construction in the 3900 block of Casgrain Drive.

Windsor police detectives and forensic identification specialists were on scene taking photos and investigating. A Ministry of Labour investigator was also on scene Friday. He wouldn’t comment.

Pinsonneault said he ran over to help the man, but the machine had shut down before he got there.

“I think his sweater got clogged in there and that’s what shut the mixer down, because I ran over to shut it off and it had shut off by the time I got there,” he said.
