Drilling mud circulating system

The drilling mud is kept mixed in the mud tanks by rotating paddles on a shaft called mud agitator or by a high pressure jet in a mud gun. Large pumps driven by the prime moves, called mud bogs, use pistons in cylinders to pump the drilling mud from the mud tank.

The mud tanks are 6 feet(1.8m) high, up to feet (2.4m) wide, and are usually 26 feet (7.9m) long. They have two, three, four or more compartments. A common mud tank configuration has the shaker tank receiving the drilling mud flows from the shaker tank to the reserve tank and then to the suction tank. Drilling mud from the suction tank goes to the mud pumps,then goes to the desander,desilter and decanter centrifuge.

Mud tank design

To maximise solids suspension in drilling mud system and usable volume, the best tank shape is round with a conical bottom. Next best is a square or rectangular shape with a v-bottom. The least preferred shape is the square or rectangular box with a flat bottom. The ideal tank depth is equal to the width or diameter of the tank. This design provides sufficient pump suction head and is best for complete stirring.

Tank Compartment Equalisation
Equalisation height between compartments will depend upon the duty of the compartment. As a rule, an adjustable equaliser is needed only between the solids removal section and the addition suction section. High equalisation between the solids removal and addition suction sections also increases the ability to detect volume changes due to influx or losses to formation. Because the volume of the solids removal section remains constant, any volume change is apparent as a liquid level change in the addition suction section only. This increases the sensitivity to volume fluctuations since the change in fluid level will be more pronounced per unit volume.

Drilling deeper, longer and more challenging wells has been made possible by improvements in drilling technologies, including more efficient and effective drilling fluids. Drilling fluids, also referred to as drilling mud, are added to the wellbore to facilitate the drilling process by suspending cuttings, controlling pressure, stabilizing exposed rock, providing buoyancy, and cooling and lubricating. As early as the third century BC, the Chinese were using drilling fluids, in the form of water, to help permeate the ground when drilling for hydrocarbons. The term "mud" was coined when at Spindletop in the US, drillers ran a herd of cattle through a watered-down field and used the resulting mud to lubricate the drill. While the technology and chemistry of drilling fluids have become much more complex, the concept has remained the same.

Why control drilling solids?

Usually, an oil well has its maximum level of drilling solids that can be tolerated before problems immerse. This level depends on the solids formation, the type of drilling mud used, and the characteristics of the solids. But many work-over rigs that occasionally do some drillings still do not employ solid removal equipment which seems to work satisfactorily only as long as drilling is confined to short intervals. Drilling without removing solids, the drilling circulating system will contain a constant volume of slid phase. The pit level will also remain at a constant level even through the circulating volume increases as an additional hole is drilled, (pit levels will actually rise by the volume of the drill string to added to the hole). The additional solids from drilling mud will increase the mud weight. Usually many problems will arise if too many drilling solids are allowed to remain in the drilling mud. These effects do not immediately appear after the drilling solids concentrations reach excessive levels. For this reason, many drillers accustomed to drilling shallow wells with unweighted drilling mud, find it hard to believe that drilling solid are the cause of their problems. Experience has shown them otherwise. Therefore, it is beneficial to take the detrimental effects of drilling solids seriously and remove them from the drilling mud.
