WATERLOO | A road contractor won approval to put a temporary concrete batch plant north of Lost Island Water Park.
The Waterloo Board of Adjustment voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the request from Croell Redi-Mix, of New Hampton, which would be utilizing the site during a resurfacing project on Dysart Road south of the city.
There were no objections to the request for a variance, which would allow the plant to operate until Oct. 31.
The site is owned by the Bertch family, which owns the water park and also Bamboo Ridge Campground across Hess Road to the west. The Isle Casino Hotel Waterloo is to the east.
Croell's Bob Hansen said the site is much safer and will create less wear on roadways because it is closer to the construction site. The concrete batching plantmay only be needed for three weeks if the weather cooperates, he added.
Black Hawk County is resurfacing six miles of Dysart Road from Orange Road south to Eagle Road.
Croell Redi-Mix has a $2.9 million contract for the work from a quarter-mile south of Washburn Road to Eagle, while Peterson Contractors Inc., of Reinbeck, has a $1.4 million contract for northern segment of the project.
County officials have held a meeting with property owners along the construction route to discuss access and detour issues.
Dysart Road is closed now between Schrock and Eagle roads so subdrains can be installed.
